17 ACT - Mandatory Disclosure begins November 1, 2010. Are you ready?

The Commercial Building Disclosure Scheme "Mandatory Disclosure" will commence on 1 November 2010. Under the terms of the legislation, owners and lessors of commercial office space with a net lettable area of 2,000m2 or more will be required to disclose energy efficiency information to prospective buyers and tenants when the space is sold, leased or subleased. Come along to the Property Council workshop to make sure you have all the tips and tools so you don't get left behind!

22 ACT - Discovery of Australopithicus Sediba in South Africa: Implications For Our Family Tree
23 September 2010
Paul Dirks will present a lecture on the discovery of a new human ancestor, Australopithecus sediba. Paul was part of the team that discovered the fossils in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, 40 kilometres from Johannesburg, South Africa. The species is named 'sediba', which means 'wellspring' in seSotho, because it represents a transitional form between early australopithecines and early members of the genus Homo.

24 ACT - The Future of the Australian Bill of Rights Debate
16 September 2010
Repeated attempts have been made since World War II to bring about a national Bill of Rights for Australia. More recently, the Federal Government established a consultation panel headed by Father Frank Brennan that generated high levels of support from the community for a National Human Rights Act. Despite this, in early 2010 the Government rejected the panel’s recommendation on the Act.

29 ACT - Smiths in Stasiland: Archival Reminders of an Uncomfortable Australian Past

Dr Peter Stanley is currently researching Australia’s Great War through the experience of people with the family name Smith, and German-Australians called Schmidt. Through diaries, letters, memoirs, family histories and official records, a different history of the Great War emerges that contrasts to the interpretation usually offered. It is a history of an officious ‘Military Intelligence’ bureaucracy which insinuated its way into many aspects of wartime life.
